We all have our fears and we are ruled to a greater or lesser extent by our fears – some fears are rational and some really are irrational – and so he tells them this silly absurd story to help them confront their fears. We are given the insight: And he preaches as through story about their fears. Robert California’s story connects everyone in the branch, and it connects with everyone in the branch. And that fevered night, she rushed to the nursery, threw open the door, “Baby, are you ok?” Baby sat up slowly, turned to Mother and said, “I’m fine Bitch. Every time she wanted to act and didn’t and other parts of her face hardened until it was stone. Her lips slowly grew together from disuse. She had quit the book club, the choir, saying something about their high expectations. It was about this time she lost herself in an imaginary world. Each night they slept one inch farther apart until one night, Lydia left. “Oh, wait,” she thought, “I don’t have a husband.” For Lydia and her husband had had an argument, one they couldn’t get past. Almost instinctively she turned to her husband.
Embalmed bodies rose from their sarcophagi, lurching toward the baby, for they were mummies.
Baby struggled to free itself from underneath, reaching and clawing, gasping for air. She walked to the nursery and there in baby’s crib was a snake wrapped around baby’s neck, squeezing tighter and tighter. That very night, Lydia was awakened by a loud, heinous hissing sound. One day, a young woman, Lydia, moved into the house with her infant child. It was rumored a man committed suicide there after being possessed by the devil. Robert California : When I was a boy, there was an empty house just up the hill from my family’s.
But if you have seen it, I reckon the episode is a great, albeit fictional, case study on how to connect to your audience’s heart through the power of story: In other words, watch the whole episode if you haven’t seen it. Without knowing the episode, let alone the characters’ backstories and where this part of the nine seasons story finds them, the text and the clip probably don’t make that much sense. Towards the end of the episode, this strange and enigmatic character crafts a ghost story weaving in everyone’s fears – fears of dying alone, mummies, not spending enough time with their children, an unresolved disagreement. At his first Halloween party as CEO of Sabre – Dunder Mifflin, Robert California walks the office getting to know everyone, asking them about their fears.
Employee Transfer (Season 5, Episode 5)Ĥ.The Halloween party was a recurring feature episode of The Office, as it is in many American TV shows. Just for fun, here are my rankings for The Office Halloween episodes (from worst to best), not including Koi Pond, since the scene was deleted.ĥ.
Now, you should go watch the rest of The Office Halloween specials. Anyway, if you haven’t ever seen that Halloween scene, I hope you enjoyed it. With the “offensive” culture being ever so present in today’s society, it is very refreshing to watch The Office and just think how it was an absolute phenomenon just 10-15 years ago. That is one of the reasons why The Office is such a great show…because it has so much humor in it that would cause so many of today’s people to get upset at. I can see why the scene was deleted, but also don’t think it necessarily should have. Shortly thereafter, the scene was deleted from the show in every viewing capacity, including not being included on the DVD box set when it was released the following year.
His pretending to hang himself in front of the children to spread a “positive message” was deemed too much by the public when it first aired on tv in 2009. Once again, things like that are what make Michael so great throughout his time on the show.ĭigging even deeper, you have Creed being Creed (by being extra creepy with the blood), Jim being Jim (with his effortless attempt at a Halloween costume by being ‘Facebook’), and Dwight being Dwight (by having on a very realistic, extravagant Halloween costume with Jigsaw).īost most importantly in this scene, we have Michael being Michael which is why the scene was ultimately deleted and not very many people have ever seen it. Secondly, you have to love the “gangster pumpkin,” introduction which causes Darryl to give a dissatisfied face to the camera. Nobody else has that immature sense of humor. First of all, Michael’s costume…you have to love it because nobody else would wear it except for him, especially with the children present.
